Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the ad-hoc committee probing the alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, says the committee has secured a new tape which is supposed to be a comprehensive recording of the conversation.
Mr Samuel Atta Akyea made this revelation in an interview with JoyNews’ Samuel Mbura after the committee’s hearing on Monday.
“…Now we have had the benefit of the tape on the assumption that it is authentic. The members of the committee will have to internalize that tape and also transcribe and look at it, and that will give us the ideas as to what to do…,” he said.
According to him, the committee will examine the supposed new tape.
He also said that after reviewing the tape, the committee would decide whether or not to require the witnesses to bring attorneys for cross-examination and further interrogation.
He asserted that reviewing the tape will require an in-camera hearing to prevent sensitive information from becoming public due to security implications.
He, however, withheld the information about the channels used to obtain the tape.
“We might not divulge our sources because then you block people from giving us information but then we have the tape which is supposed to be the comprehensive tape.
“If you told the world that it was Kofi Mensah who brought me the tape, we might not get the next tape or final tape or any information,” he said.

This comes after the Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare doubted the authenticity of the leaked tape in the public domain although admitted to portions of the recordings.
They argued that the tape had been doctored.

“What I am saying is that this tape that was played today is an edited tape…the tape played today has so many things I don’t remember and there are things that were said that are not on the tape,” the Supt. said.
On July 25, the Speaker of Parliament named Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta-Akyea as the chairperson of a seven-member ad-hoc committee to probe the recently leaked controversial audio in which voices are heard clandestinely plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police.
The viral audio, which revealed a supposed conspiracy by a senior police officer and a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office, resulted in a debate on the floor of Parliament with the Minority calling for a forensic audit.
Subsequently, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin proposed the setting up of the Special Committee, and asked the committee to submit its report by September 10, 2023.
