Four-time Nigerian Basketball League champions, Rivers Hoopers were hosted by Rivers State Governor, Similanayi Fubara on Friday where he assured the team of its continued support.
This followed their victorious outing at the second edition of the Louis Edem Invitational Basketball Championship in Lagos in September, the Rivers State Government rewarded the KingsMen with the sum of thirty million naira (N30,000,000).
Governor Similanayi Fubara made the pronouncement when the Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, led the management and players of the team to hand over the trophy to the Governor at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.
He said with the support given to the team, it is also expected of them to keep working hard with discipline to win.
“It is not just about giving you the endowment in terms of financial support, but it is also good to see that the contributions of the management and the players themselves collectively contributed to the success of the team. So, I say thank you.”
“What you are doing today serves as a message to the youths constituting a nuisance and perpetuating all forms of criminality to make them realise that they are wasting their energies as opposed to deploying them towards useful ventures for the benefit of our State.”
The Governor commended the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Christopher Green for effectively managing the team to achieve results.
In his speech Green applauded the Governor for rewarding hard work because the Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club won all six games and also beat Ghana’s Spintex Knights to emerge winners of the Louis Edem Invitational Basketball competition in Lagos.
Handball Premier League Winners To Get N2.5m
‘Eagles Need More Quality Friendlies To Win Cote d’Ivoire 2024 AFCON’
Winners at the final phase of the Ardova Handball Premier League’s final phase will earn N2.5 million, the organisers have said.
The second and last phase of the league will hold in Lagos from November 13 to 26, 2023.
Handball Federation of Nigeria’s (HFN) Secretary General, Mr. Almu Umar, who announced the date for the completion of the league, advised the teams to put their teams in order ahead of the competition.
He said the final round of the league will hold at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos and the Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba.
Niger United and Safety Babes are currently leading the men and women’s charts from the Phase One held in Benin City, Edo State.
In its sixth season, the league’s new title sponsor, Ardova PLC, offers each of the 20 participating teams (12 men and 10 women teams) a N500, 000 preparatory grant, while winners get N2.5 million prize money.
Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro, believes that playing more quality friendly games on good pitches will aid Nigeria’s quest to win its fourth Africa Cup of Nations at the 2024 edition in Cote d’Ivoire.
He said good preparation and training on good pitches would help the technical crew to assemble an outstanding squad capable of surmounting every opposition at the AFCON.
Commending the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for arranging the international friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique, Peseiro said more of such games would expose the team’s frailties and help the coaches find solutions to them before the AFCON.
“The Eagles need to play against the best teams because such games help to expose our current level and where we need improvement.
“Some of the players I really wanted to see their performance through the friendly games could not make it to the Portugal camp and I had to get quick replacements for them. There are committed players in the present Eagles’ squad and they are ready for the challenges ahead,” he said.
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles defender, Bright Omokaro, has said that the Nigerian team has what it takes to win Group A of the 2024 AFCON, which comprises Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau.
He said the quality in the Eagles current squad should be every coach’s delight, adding, however, that the team needs hard work and quality preparation to return to the summit of the African game.
“Playing against Cote d’Ivoire, which is a strong team and also the host of the AFCON in the opening game might be tough for the Super Eagles, but I strongly believe Nigeria will not be disgraced in that game.
“Nigerians should be positive about the Eagles in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers and next year’s AFCON,” he said.
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) , Rivers State Chapter, has awarded  certificates of quality reportage at the just concluded  National Youth Games ( NYG) held in Asaba, Delta State, to Mr Kiadum Edookor, Mr Dele Obinna of The Tide Newspapers  and six other  members from various media.
Speaking during the event yestersday, in a congress meeting held at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the association Sarah David lauded the efforts of the eight members who covered the games.
According to her, the executive felt that was one of the ways to say thank you to the members who effectively reported the games in  Asaba, adding that the certificates  given to them were a mark of  honour and recognition because the reportage was equally exceptional.
“For us as executive of SWAN, Rivers, we felt that giving them certificates was one of the ways to say thank you to our members following their accurate reports during the games.
“Every right thinking person on SWAN Rivers WhatsApp platform will agree with me that our members who went to cover the games were exceptional, dropping reports per second per minute on our platform.
“We did not lack any information about the NYG as it has to do with Team Rivers. So we felt to thank them because they are real good ambassadors.
“And I want to use this opportunity to appreciate the State Ministry of Sports which has been partnering with the association over the years.
“As an executive we are also aware there are new things happening everywhere and that is why we also brought some innovations to the association” David said.
Other awardees include  Erenayo Dorcas Koki of Naija Info;
Ezinne Oti of Today FM;
Peter Abaje of DAAR Communications; Independent photo journalist, Ibisaki Temple Igani; Oqwy Osakwe of Super FM and Team leader, Innocent Solomon-Wokoma.
Also speaking, the leader of the eight-man team, Solomon-Wokoma expressed joy for receiving the certificate.
Wokoma, who was a FIFA badged referee, lauded the Chairman and the exco for the noble gesture.
Another recipient, Oqwy Osakwe, while expressing gratitude described the award as a pleasant surprise, saying that all the members who went to Asaba worked as a team to achieve success.
“It was as a result of passion for sports,” Osakwe said.
In the same vein an active member of the association Mba Kalu also thank the  exco, saying that this would encourage others to work harder subsequently.
